Physicist.
Chemist. Economist. Sufi spiritual disciple. Master sculptor
and painter. This is Jamali, the man called one of “The
Most Fascinating People in the World” by GQ Magazine. Jamali
comes to Miami to unveil Mystical Expressionism, a collection
of more than 30 pieces of artwork never before exhibited
in public. The exhibition, in cooperation with Florida International
University , will take place at Pop N' Art gallery in the Village
of Merrick Park in Coral Gables , on March 12 th from 6-10pm
.
Preeminent
art critic, Donald Kuspit, heralds Jamali as the originator
of a school of painting he calls Mystical Expressionism. “This
movement combines elements of the raw emotion of German Expressionism,
the play of light in French impressionism, and the abstract elements
of American Abstract Expressionism in a new totality.”
Jamali's work is unique because of its direct connection to
his devotion of the Sufi spiritual practice. The perennial theme
in Jamali's artwork is an inner search that is expressed in triumphal
and mythic imagery, originating from his dreams. Jamali literally
ritualizes his work by actually dancing in the paintings, in
the midst of the elements and natural world, thereby creating
saturated esoteric pieces sometimes filled with rocks, leafs,
twigs or anything else that descends upon his work including
his gloves and/or clothing.
Jamali's client list reads like a Who's Who of the celebrity
world, among others one can find names such as: Oprah Winfrey,
Emeril Legasse, Elton John, Rachel Welch, Tiger Woods, Al len
Jackson, tennis pro Todd Woodbridge, Kelsey Grammar, basketball
pro Horace Grant and race car driver Rick Mears, among others.
This exhibition will also feature the world book release of
Rizzoli Publication's, Jamali, Dreams and Work, a 400-page
pictorial chronicling the origination of Mystical Expressionism.
The book includes the artist's dreams and inspirations as well
as essays by Donald Kuspit and Philip E. Bishop.
"We are thrilled to welcome an artist of Jamali's caliber
to our gallery in Coral Gables ,” said Tamar Erdberg, owner of
Pop' N Art Gallery. “In addition to the magnificent paintings
we will have on display, we're twice blessed, since we're also
hosting the official world premier of his beautiful new book.”
“The supreme historians are artists,” says Jamali. “ Al
l authentic art is memory. Whether it was art in the past,
art in the present or in the future. It is all about memory.
I was born with a warehouse of memories.” |
